Love, Aubrey by Suzanne LaFleur

Our teacher's book club met today to discuss Love, Aubrey by Suzanne LaFleur. All attendees agreed that the book was wonderful. Several teachers commented that they "cried" through the second half of the book. Others expressed sympathy for Aubrey while others could understand her mother's breakdown. One teacher commented that only the members of the book club who were not mothers sympathized with Aubrey's mother. Most agreed that Aubrey's decision at the end of the book was the right one. What made Love, Aubrey touch our hearts? What would we do when faced with this kind of tragedy? Would be like Aubrey, her grandmother or her mother? How can we use what we learned about this book in our own lives? Good books make a person think and Love, Aubrey was a great book.

Due to the excitement about the books that we are reading, we have agreed to move up our next meeting to April 11, instead of waiting until May. We will read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand next.

  2. I really enjoyed Love, Aubrey as well. I looked forward to getting back to her story every night. It was heartbreaking walking through her story as she learned her way through the horrific events in her life. You are pulled in so many directions as she struggles to determine what is best for her and the difficult choice she must make for herself and her own survival. The grandmother is such a strong character and understands her priorities as she manages her own grief and helps her granddaughter through hers. This book will challenge you to understand the grief process and the many ways it presents. I hope other will read about Aubrey, enjoy meetting her through this book and love her. As an educator, it reminds us of the struggles, hardships, and perils that some of our students face every day. I enjoyed the meeting very much and am looking forward to April as well.

  3. Hi, All,
I wasn't far enough along with recovery to attend the March Teacher Book Club meeting, but I plan to attend the one in April. Can't wait to see all of you.

  4. I really enjoyed the book and the meeting to discuss the book. A wise counselor told me once that "every grief touches every other grief." Love, Aubrey allowed me to "touch grief," and come away hopeful. Thanks so much to Mrs. C. for choosing this one!
